About Heron Connect

A networking app for the DevDay Community Hackathon at Hoxton Docks, Sunday 1 November 2026.

Why it exists

About 450 people are in the building today, and most of them will only meet the few people sitting next to them. Heron Connect suggests one person each round and tells you why you'd get on. If you both say yes, it suggests a spot to meet. Then you go and say hi.

How matching works

  • We build your profile from your public GitHub profile and repos, a web search for your public work that keeps only what links back to your GitHub, your own site or your LinkedIn profile, and anything you add. You can change or remove any of it.
  • Each round you and one other person are suggested to each other, picked for shared interests or skills that fit. If you both say yes, we suggest a spot and a time. Either of you can skip, up to 5 times a round.
  • Rather not do one to ones? Choose group meet-ups of 3 or 4 people who share an interest. You just join, with nobody to wait for.
  • Rounds follow the event's schedule: every 30 minutes while people are building, shorter over lunch and at the start and end, and none during talks or judging.
  • The reason to talk is written by an AI model when one is switched on, and labelled AI-written. Otherwise it's a simple sentence from your shared tags.

Your privacy

  • Only people who have signed in and finished setup are ever shown to anyone.
  • A photo is optional. If you add one, it's shown only to people you're suggested to, and to the organisers.
  • Nobody sees your email. We use it for event alerts, and for one demo email unless you untick that box.
  • We ask once if you're at Hoxton Docks: your phone works it out and sends us only yes or no. Your exact location, and the “you are here” dot, stay on your phone.
  • Delete everything from Settings, instantly. After the event we delete it all within 30 days unless you ask us to keep your profile.

The details are in the privacy notice and the terms.
